Black Peak, also known as Kalanag, is a majestic mountain located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India. Standing at an impressive altitude of 6,387 meters (20,955 feet), it is part of the Bandarpunch massif, which holds cultural and geological significance. The name “Kalanag,” meaning “Black Cobra,” stems from its distinct shape resembling the hood of a cobra.

Renowned among trekking and mountaineering enthusiasts, Black Peak offers a thrilling blend of adventure and natural beauty. The journey to its summit takes adventurers through dense forests, alpine meadows, and serene glaciers, providing breathtaking views of nearby peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpunch, and Gangotri. The trek to the base camp is an experience in itself, enriched by encounters with diverse flora, fauna, and pristine landscapes.

Black Peak is considered a moderately challenging climb, suitable for those with some prior mountaineering experience. Its captivating allure lies in its remote location and the opportunity to witness the grandeur of the untouched Himalayan wilderness. Whether for seasoned mountaineers or adventure seekers, Black Peak stands as a testament to the raw beauty and thrill of the Indian Himalayas.

Itinerary

Dehradun to Dehradun

Day 1 : From Dehradun to Sankri
Our meeting spot is Dehradun Railway Station or ISBT, where we will meet and travel to Sankri. You may eat your breakfast at Kempty Fall, which is a popular picnic location with a waterfall. At Purola, stop for lunch in the middle of your tour. It’s a gorgeous trip to Sankri; you’ll get beautiful views from your window as you pass through Dehradun, Mussoorie, Nainbagh, Damta, Newman, Purola, Mori, and Netwar, all of which are beautiful Himalayan towns. Sankri is a hamlet with a little market noted for wooden huts serving delightful cuisine, located in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary of Uttarkashi district. There are apple orchards and plenty of greenery here. Reach Sankri for a view of snow-capped mountains, pollution-free air, and a rejuvenating atmosphere.

Day 2 : Day reserved for briefing
Prepare for the excursion now; our expert leader will inform you and provide you with all of the specifics. After you’ve completed the proper paperwork, you may relax or go for a short trek.

Day 3 : From Sankri to Taluka drive and trek to Osla
After breakfast, take a cab to Taluka, which is 11 kilometres from Sankri. There are few concrete dwellings and motels in this little hamlet. The walk begins at Taluka and leads to Osla. Pass through lush forests dotted with walnut trees, with vistas of Himalayan villages ahead. After a moderate elevation, you will arrive at Osla village, the largest settlement known for its culture. The villagers worship Duryodhana at a temple dedicated to him. After erecting your tents and exploring this charming location, relax for the night.

Day 4 : From Osla to Ruinsara Lake
Early in the morning, after breakfast, depart towards Ruinsara, a glacier lake revered by the people for the purity of its waters.

Day 5 : From Ruinsara Lake to Base Camp
Make a wish at Ruinsara Lake and then travel to Kyarkoti (Base Camp). The sight of Black Peak from here is enough to fuel you for the days ahead. Set up your tents and settle in for the day at Kyarkoti, a meadow surrounded by mountains and pebbles.

Day 6 : From Load Ferry, Base Camp to Advance Base Camp and back
Take the ferry from Base Camp to ABC and back. Stay the night in Base Camp.

Day 7 : From Base Camp to Advance Base Camp
Follow the same route from Base Camp to ABC that you did yesterday.

Day 8 : From Advance Base Camp (ABC) to Camp 1 and back
Load the ferry from ABC to Camp 1 and take in the breathtaking views of Black Peak. Return to ABC after setting up Camp 1.

Day 9 : From ABC to Camp 1
Continue on the same way you took yesterday. The journey from ABC to Camp 1.

Day 10 : From Camp 1 to Summit Camp
The ascent is difficult; Summit Camp is located at a height of 5500 metres. The campground will be reached after three hours. Retire early after erecting the tents.

Day 11 : Day of Summit attempt
After analysing the weather and trail conditions, start early after midnight. The ice remains strong and firm in the morning, making walking on it easier.

The height of Black Peak (Kala Nag) is 6387 metres, and the ascent is hard; utilise your equipment to go to the summit. Traversing the summit will leave you feeling fulfilled. After some hours spent there, return to Summit camp.

Day 12 : Reserved for Summit attempt
Extra day to attempt the summit.

Day 13 : From Summit Camp to Base Camp
Following a successful summit ascent, descend from Summit camp to Base camp.

Day 14 : From Base Camp to Osla
On Day 2, descend from Base Camp to Osla Village, where you spent the night. Talk to the folks and get to know them.

Day 15 : From Osla to Taluka and drive to Sankri
Begin your descent to Taluka by bidding farewell to this charming community. When you get there, take a little break. The walk comes to a conclusion here, and transportation to Sankri will be provided.

Day 16 : From Sankri to Dehradun
Leave for Dehradun early so that you can reach by 6:00 pm.
